Although the Baruch proposal for a multinational corporation to develop the peaceful uses of atomic energy failed to win the necessary Soviet support, the concept of combining development, production, and control in one agency. While I was in the US Navy, Glasstone's Sourcebook on atomic energy was the basis for one of many excellent and interesting correspondence courses that I completed. The book is laid out like the Bible and, I presume, intended for convenient citation and reference. It is more of Cited by:
I am pleased to be with you today to share a few of my thoughts on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Last year marked the 50 th anniversary of the international "Atoms for Peace" initiative - as well as the "Golden Jubilee" year of India´s own Department of Atomic Energy - and we have seen numerous retrospective evaluations of the progress. Project Plowshare was the overall United States program for the development of techniques to use nuclear explosives for peaceful construction purposes. As part of the program, 31 nuclear warheads were detonated in 27 separate tests. Plowshare was the US portion of what are called Peaceful Nuclear Explosions (PNE);.
The scientists who had raced to produce a bomb had also developed theories for a number of possible uses for the atom. Martin Mann lists a number of them in his book, Peacetime Uses of Atomic Energy. Ideas ranged from power generation, to nuclear excavation, to nuclear propulsion for vehicles on land, sea, and in the air. Peacetime uses of outer space. Each lecture constitutes a chapter of this book, although their sequence has been rearranged."--Preface, page v. From the start, of course, researchers had known that another use for atomic energy was as a power source. After World War II the U.S. government was quick to realize that potential as well. In President Truman signed a law that created the Atomic Energy Commission, whose mandate included not only the development of atomic weapons but also the exploration of other applications.
